Initially, if there are some performance issues, it maybe possible for the employee's manager to deal with them. Alternatively, if an informal meeting is inappropriate then a formal hearing could be held with the usual procedures applying. On most performance issues you need to give the employee some time to improve and set out a performance plan.
- Keep the employee fully informed at all stages
- Use clear and achievable objectives with a reasonable timescale
- Offer assistance, training and supervision
- Genuinely attempt to avoid dismissal
- Comply with the statutory procedure
- Keep the process well documented
- Employers should allow a right of appeal
